Pet of the Week & Local Adopt-A-Pets

Name: Gemini
Gender: Female, Spayed
Size: Medium
Age: 2 years old
Color: Domestic Medium Haired Tortoiseshell

Gemini was surrendered to Garland Animal Services by her previous owner. She soon became a pound favorite and most of the employees really liked her and wanted to keep her around because she was so extremely sweet and pretty. However, slow adoptions and overcrowding caused her time to max out, and she would either need to be pulled by a rescue group or euthanized. In March, NBCR happily rescued this lovely girl and added her to our adoption program.

Tortoiseshell cats are not a specific breed. It is really a specific genetic coloring pattern. Torties don’t have to have tortie parents, and they are always born female, with only an occasional male being born. However, these males are always sterile.

For her part, Gemini is a great cat who enjoys being touched and petted, and purrs instantly when you do. She likes making “biscuits" in your lap, and is quite content to curl up next to you for a nap. You won't find a sweeter kitty than Gemini.

Pet of the Week & Local Adopt-A-Pets

Name: Harrison
Gender: Male, Neutered
Size: Small
Age: Adult
Breed: Dachshund
Color: Black & Tan

Harrison is a wonderful, long, and loving gentleman who appreciates being around caring people.  Harrison has the great color, clear eyes, and the energy of a young dog.  Some of his teeth, however, have left him a while back due to a history of poor dental care.  We've taken care of Harrison's dental needs, cleaning things up for that bright, white smile and nice, fresh breath.  Now that he's feeling good and beautiful again, Harrison is a happy, healthy little guy ready for a loving home! He is vaccinated and neutered.

Pet of the Week & Local Adopt-A-Pets

Name: Ace
Gender: Male, Neutered
Size: Medium
DOB: Summer 2007
Breed: Labrador Retriever
Color: Chocolate

Ace is a sweet, loving, and easy-going boy. He is fairly quiet, and seldom barks except when he wants your attention. He lives with a cat and three other labs, and gets along well with everyone.

Although he is less than a year old, his previous owner neglected him so much that he has already had hip surgery. He is doing well, and there have been no complications. However, he would benefit from a canine playmate or living companion.

He is housetrained, crate trained, and vaccinated. He will also require regular exercise. Please contact us soon if you are interested in this beautiful boy.

Pet of the Week & Local Adopt-A-Pets

Name: Amidala
Gender: Female, Spayed
Size: Medium
DOB: Mid 2006 – Mid 2007
Breed: Boxer Mix
Color: White with Brown

Hi there! My name is Amidala, but you can call me Ami for short. My foster mom tells me I was named after a princess, so I try to act the part! I want to be lady-like, but honestly, I like to play and wrestle a lot more!

I'm a boxer mix, but don't let that fool you; I've got all the best boxer qualities. I'm cuddly, energetic, smart, loyal, goofy and fun! Plus, who could resist these ears?

I'm still pretty young, so I've got a ton of energy and I still like to do fun puppy things, like stealing your slippers and playing with anything that remotely looks like a toy! Kongs and Nylabones are my favorite things to chew on, and I love those loofah dogs to throw around! I'm learning commands quickly, and working very hard on my manners!

I would really like to go to a forever home where I have a buddy. I can be a little bold at first, so a more submissive male might be best. What can I say, I like to be the boss!

I think I'd be okay alone too, but I need to get lots of exercise to keep my girlish figure! My favorite move is my mid-air 360!

PET OF THE WEEK: Jackson, from New Beginnings Cat Rescue

Name: Jackson
Gender: Male, Neutered
Size: Medium
DOB: 2003
Breed: DSH Tuxedo
Color: Black & White

Jackson is a handsome black and white tuxedo with green eyes. He was a stray being fed in a trailer park in Seagoville where some volunteers were working. Jackson was so cute and curious and kept hanging around waiting to be fed. After a little sweet talk and some canned food, we were able to pet him and pick him up. He was very sweet and docile. We decided we had to take him and give him the life he deserved.

He is now very contented to be indoors. He loves being petted and held, and will head-butt your hand if you stop petting him before he thinks you should. He is also great at using his scratching post. He is more of a lover than a player, and he wants a home of his own to relax and feel safe in without having to worry about food and shelter.

He is FIV+ but shows no signs of illness. We think he will be fine around kids and dogs, but should not be around other cats unless they too are FIV+. Information about caring for an FIV+ cat can easily be found online, or by consulting your veterinarian.

PET OF THE WEEK: Samson, A Different Breed

Name: Samson
Gender: Male, Neutered
Size: Small
DOB: Dec 2006
Breed: Shepherd Mix
Color: Tri-Color

Samson is the most handsome hunk of a large litter rescued from starvation and the streets with their mother. The whole puppy-n-kaboodle were taken in by a rescuer with a Heart of Gold.

Samson was adopted months ago, the first one to be adopted. He did very well. However, his adopter did not so well, and had to return Samson after he became hospitalized with a stroke. So now Samson has to start looking for another forever home.

Samson is house broken, on heartworm medication, and is treated with flea preventative every month. He gets along great with all the other dogs in the foster home. He is very submissive. Anything comes up – he is on the ground. “I give up, sorry, sorry,” The low ranking dogs love him – finally somebody they can dominate. Yet his bark is very impressive. He is not barky, but will bark at strangers, guarding his territory. He is very well behaved, but would not do well with a cat or other small pets.

PET OF THE WEEK: Tara from Dachshund Lovers of Texas

Name: Tara
Gender: Female, Spayed
Size: Small
DOB: 2002
Breed: Long-Haired Dachshund
Color: Dapple

Tara is a very special young lady. Although she's had back surgery and lost the ability to walk or stand on her own, she is still the first one to wag and give doggie kisses! Tara is still learning to get around in her cart, generously provided by the same family who paid for her surgery. Tara is usually just as happy scooting around by pulling herself with her front legs, but Tara is never discouraged. Tara's unstoppable spirit and loving nature have totally endeared her to her fosters, and it will take a very special, caring person to adopt her.

PET OF THE WEEK: Kylee, from Companion Animal Network

Name: Kylee
Gender: Female, Spayed
Size: Medium – 50 lbs.
DOB: 2006
Breed: Australian Kelpie Mix
Color: Black, white, and brown

Kylee adores people - grown ups and children alike. She is extremely intelligent and obedient, and has a happy, outgoing spirit. We found her when she was only 9 months old. She was running along a busy street in Dallas near White Rock Lake. We could not find a foster home, so Kylee lived at the vet clinic for more than a year. Several people agreed to foster her, but backed out before they could take her. Recently she was in a foster home, but a fire broke out so the family has left for the time being, which means she is being boarded once again.

Kylee loves some dogs, but really doesn't like others, and we feel it would be better for Kylee to be an only pet. This poor girl has been through so much in her short life, and she is more than ready to find a forever home. Even if you cannot adopt at this time, we are still seeking donations to help cover her boarding costs.

PET OF THE WEEK: Poppi, from Education & Animal Rescue Society

Name: Poppi
Gender: Male, Neutered
Size: 10 lbs
DOB: 2006
Breed: Pug / Chihuahua Mix
Color: Brown

Poppi is an adorable Chihuahua/Pug mix that was recently rescued from a local animal shelter where he came to stay when his owners said they could not care for him any longer.

He loves everything and everyone, and finds fun in day-to-day activities, like playing with his toys, hanging out with the dog, cat, or humans in his foster home, going for long walks, or hopping in the car for a ride. However, one of his favorite pastimes is snuggling with his foster parents in bed or on the sofa.

Poppi is a wonderful dog who is a joy to be around, and he’s very easy to take care of as well.

Pet of the Week: Princess, from Lone Star Bulldog Rescue

Name: Princess
Gender: Female, Spayed
Size: Medium
DOB: 2003
Breed: Bulldog
Color: Brown Brindle and White

Roll out the red carpet, my loyal subjects. This is Princess and, let me tell you, I may not wear a tiara, but I definitely live up to my name. I'm not some young pup who doesn't know basic manners. At five years old, I'm quite the lady.

I know all the proper dog commands any polite dog of royalty should know— sit, stay, shake, roll over and lay down. I am also what they call, "housetrained." I cannot imagine how any dog could call herself a lady if she "goes" in the house. How rude!

I love to curl up on the couch with any human that is aware of my “princess” status. I must say I also get along with the common dogs that my current foster host entertains as her “pets”.

If your home is ready to take in a refined lady, such as myself, I encourage you to submit an application. You just might have the pampering skills needed to satisfy this royal Bully's needs. My adoption fee is $450 and that includes my sterilization and vaccinations.

Name: Brooke
Gender: Female, Spayed
Size: Medium
DOB: August 2007
Breed: Turkish Angora Mix
Color: Smokey Grey & White

Brooke is a beautiful female gray tuxedo with the most beautiful medium hair you have ever seen; and talk about a plumy tail! She tells you so every time she rubs her head into your hand.

PET OF THE WEEK: Tippy, from the Humane Society of Dallas

Name: Tippy
Gender: Female, Spayed
DOB: December 2005
Size: Medium
Breed: Terrier Mix
Color: Tan

Tippy had a nasty encounter with a tow truck. Fortunately she survived her accident, but it left her with three legs and scars on her back that will never grow hair.

Tippy enjoys playing with water and swimming. Missing one limb does not keep her from taking advantage of what life has to offer her. She is a gentle dog who gets along with other pets, but truly loves to spend time with Charlotte, her best friend at the shelter.

She is a lover! She likes to get on one’s lap and snuggle. She will make a great addition to any home.
